The Fellowship Pathway

Each step grants its own certificate or credential.

Completing all steps is not required unless you’re pursuing the F-ASAHRS Fellowship (and the SF-ASAHRS distinction for the Scientific track).

Fellowship Foundation Certificate

Four intensive, hands-on days to master consultation and hairline design, practice FUE/DHI and robotic-assisted workflows, and use AI/AR-guided planning—so you’re board-exam ready with solid documentation.

Grants you the ASAHRS-FFC Credential.

ASAHRS Board Certification

One combined Board Certification—written MCQ plus structured oral examinations —verifies judgment, safety, technique, and ethics with transparent rubrics and feedback, so you certify confidently and credibly.

Clinical Competency Evidence

The final step to showcase your knowledge of core theoretical, practical, and ethical hair-restoration concepts—with or without actual cases—via structured assessments and verification.

ASAHRS Board-certified Credential

To be eligible for certification, applicants must:

Routes to Certification

Candidates may qualify for ASAHRS certification through one of the following pathways:

  1. Experience Route: For physicians with substantial experience in hair restoration.

  2. Fellowship Route: For those who have completed a dedicated fellowship in hair restoration.

  3. Certification for Physicians New to the Specialist A structured pathway for those newly entering the field.

 

Application & Examination Process

Applicants must submit:

  • A fully completed application form (available via the ASAHRS website).

  • All required supporting documentation.

  • A non-refundable application fee, as determined by the ASAHRS Board of Directors.

Upon review and approval by the ASAHRS Credentialing Committee, candidates will be invited to appear for the certification examination.

ASAHRS Certification Examination

The certification exam consists of two critical components:

  • Written Examination: A multiple-choice test assessing theoretical knowledge, procedural expertise, and clinical decision-making skills.

  • Oral Examination: A case-based assessment evaluating a candidate’s ability to analyze complex hair restoration cases, identify best treatment options, and ensure patient safety.

ASAHRS Certification Examination Fees

  • Written Examination: $1500.00

  • Oral Examination: $1500.00

 

To achieve board certification, candidates must successfully pass both components of the examination.

After passing both exams, candidates receive the ASAHRS Board-Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon certificate and credential and then proceed to Clinical Competency Evidence to complete the requirements for the F-ASAHRS Fellowship credential and award.

Competency Evidence
F-ASAHRS Credential

The final step to showcase your mastery of the theoretical, practical, and ethical foundations of hair restoration—with or without actual cases—through structured assessments and verification. Upon successful approval of your competency evidence by the ASAHRS Board, you’ll receive the F-ASAHRS credential and be awarded the ASAHRS Fellowship Certificate

Requirement (at a glance):
Earn 5 credits from at least three categories listed below, including 1 credit from real-world exposure. To ensure breadth, no single category may exceed 3 credits. Waivers are rare and require program approval. 

What this step proves

  • Judgment & Safety: indications, consent, complication prevention, escalation.

  • Technical Literacy: FUE/DHI/robot-assisted workflows, instrumentation, asepsis.

  • Ethics & Documentation: de-identification, unbiased decision-making, clear records.

  • Practice Readiness: end-to-end reasoning from consult to follow-up.

Accepted evidence (choose any mix)

Earn a total of 5 credits from at least three categories, including at least 1.0 real-world credit (Primary/Assist/Observed), with no single category exceeding 3.0 credits.

  1. Primary Case

    • What you submit: De-identified dossier + mentor attestation + reflection

    • Credits: 1.0

    • Notes: Counts toward real-world. 

  2. Assist Case

    • Submit what you did as an assistant plus a brief reflection.

    • Credits: 0.5

    • Notes: Counts toward real-world

  3. Observed Case

    • Submit an observation checklist and a brief reflection.

    • Credits: 0.25

    • Notes: Counts toward real-world

  4. Case Simulation Lab

    • Do a supervised simulation covering consult, planning, intra-op decisions, and complications.

    • Credits: 0.5 each

    • Notes: Simulation category

  5. OSATS (Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills) Video Review

    • Send a short technique video using models; we score it.

    • Credits: 0.25 each

    • Notes: Simulation category

  6. Complication Playbook

    • Submit your prevention/management plan for a set scenario.

    • Credits: 0.25 each

    • Notes: Simulation category

  7. Grand Rounds Defense

    • Present one case in a 15-minute live oral defense with examiners.

    • Credits: 0.5

    • Notes: Simulation category

  8. Morbidity Analysis

    • Submit a mentor-verified review of a real complication and what you learned.

    • Credits: 0.5

    • Notes: Counts as real-world only if sourced from actual exposure; otherwise simulation analysis
